Joe,

Your efforts to help are certainly appreciated.  The problem as you know is the proliferation of many identical place names within eastern Europe.  So we need other clues to help narrow the search.  For example, if a person knows their family is from Volhynia, we may confuse the issue by offering place options in Belarus, Poland or southern Ukraine.  If we have evidence from historical maps of Germanic village locations, we may confuse the issue if we offer other non-Germanic options.  Similar examples could be given for other types of clues.

Some of us have the added advantage of access to other sorts of databases that provide additional clues (such as provided by Gary in this case).  Again, these types of clues will narrow the research.

Yes, the western half of Volhynia was in Poland between WW I & II.  All of Volhynia was in Poland prior to the Partitions of the late 1700s.  But, ShtetlSeeker only uses modern boundaries for the countries it serves.  So to find a Volhynian place one must look in Ukraine and consider typically those places referenced in a SSW to NNW direction from Kiev.  Further distances would narrow it even further from WSW to WNW.

I don't know what sources ShtetlSeeker uses for its databases.  It is certainly getting better at finding historical locations that no longer exist and at offering optional names where there have been changes over the years.  However, it remains far from perfect.
