Hello,
I have been researching my gg grandpaernts Johann (b. 1847) and Julianna (
b. Leier 1853) Lutz who migrated from the Kostopol area to Winnipeg in the
1890's.
I was looking in Winnipeg's English newspapers for their obituaries. I did
manage to find Julianna's obituary (died 1929) but was dissapointed to find
that it was only a couple of lines long and didn't contain any new family
information. I had no luck finding Johann's obit. I thought the chances of
finding an informative obituary for german speaking peoples in the prairies
was slim to none.
That was until about a month ago. My mother went out to the Plumas area of
Manitoba to visit a couple of my great aunts. I had given my mother specific
questions to ask them about their grandparents Johann and Julianna.
They didn't recall much in their conversation with my mother but they did
show her an old family bible that belonged to Johann and Julianna. There was
not much written inside exept for known names and a reference to Kostopol.
As my mother paged through the bible, out fell an old, yellowed
multi-paragraphed obituary of Julianna's... in German. My mom had struck
gold! It wasn't the easiest to decipher because of a hard to read gothic
style of print, but I did find out that Julianna was born in Vohlynia ( I
had though she had probably migrated there). I also got her parents names
and the name of her two siblings and some other details.
The obituary looks to be out of a newspaper of some kind as there is part of
an add and other german writing on the back.
My question is:
Does anyone know of a German newspaper printed in Winnipeg in the 1920's and
30's?
Is it archived and can it be searched? Or is this possibly a church type
pubication?
I would love to find my gg grandfathers obit although Julianna had died
first so his obituary might not be as detailed.
