A good online resource for translating between German and English is Leo.
  http://dict.leo.org/
  You can only do a word at a time. I find this site works great as a thesaurus as well giving me alternative words I might want when composing something in English. Of course it was not intended to be a thesaurus but many words can take slightly different meanings in interconverting between German and English.

Not sure without seeing it. Some records have columns indicating 
male or female, still births, illegitimate births, etc.
