Gerhard:
There were 3 Lutheran Synods active in Western Canada during the early part
of the 20th century, the Manitoba Synod of the General Council, the Ohio
Synod, and the Missouri Synod; the early Ohio and Missouri Pastors were
trained in the United States, where as (generally speaking) most of the
early Pastors for the General Council often came from Germany and all were
graduates from the Seminary at Kropp, Schleswig.
The following information was found in the "Denkschrift zum
Silber-Jubilaeum
der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Synod von Manitoba u. a.
Provinzen -1897-1922".
(25 year Commemorative booklet for the Manitoba and other provinces, Synod
for the
General Council).
I could not find anything on where Kersten was born or ordained; however he
served in the following parishes:
Edenwald, Saskatchewan- 1913-1915;
Dresden, North Dakota, U.S.A.-1915-1917;
Bashaw, Alberta - 1918 to 1921.
The Synodal-Versammlungen gathered in 1918 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta;
1919 in Kennell(now Craven, Saskatchewan) and 1921 in Edenwald,
Saskatchewan.
The Praeses from 1917 onward was H.(Heinrich) Becker and the Schatzmeister
was G.L. Maron and as well, G. Tuerkheim was the Sekretaer.
The name could be confused with a Pastor Heinrich Richard Karstens who was
born May 4, 1865 in Kiel.
The minutes of these Synodal meeting should be available from the Lutheran
Archives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Hope this sheds a little more light on your project.
Howard Krushel
