You can't say anything about where your grandfather came from based on his ability to speak English. He was likely very good at languages and this may have masked whatever accent he may have had. Germans typically mispronounce our "w" and "th" sounds but if they had exposure to other languages (like those of Russian Polish background) they might have been able to pick up these sounds.
