Thanks to everyone who replied to my request. I think Braetz is the best bet although further away than I would have thought. The pronunciation is very close.

A much better phonetic match in German for Brec would be Br?tz, Kr. Meseritz (POSEN), which many people (in marriage records in Russian Poland) show as their birthplace
