[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Looking for Brec

A much better phonetic match in German for Brec
would be Brätz, Kr. Meseritz (POSEN), which many people
(in marriage records in Russian Poland) show as
their birthplace

In Polish marriage records (remember, in Russian
Poland, marriage records are in Polish, not in German)
Brest would almost always be rendered correctly as
Brześć.

These kind of discussions are inevitable (in a good way!)
when trying to sort out what could be meant.  And in recent
days we have seen examples of a few types.

          this one, where a pastor writing in Polish needs to
          render a German place-name in Polish spelling.

          the cases where people preparing the EWZ records
          in German need to render a Polish spelling (often
          poorly remembered) in German.

This is one of the peculiarities of doing genealogy
in our area of the world that is so "loveable".  If
it were just a matter of knowing German, Polish or
Russian....  Knowledge of the phonetics of each
language and its relation to orthography aids in
sorting out these kinds of problem.
