Hello Everyone-
I do not have time at the moment to expand on the following. A bit of
ever popular 'googling' will readily complexify the topic. The
following is my attempt to at least point a finger in 'a' direction
to look. Will Durant's "Age of Napoleon", also one or two of his
other publications offer what I consider scholarly unbiased
viewpoints. Will's writings help one grasp an understanding of
happenings as part of a world scene, that oft mentioned 'big
picture.' Nothing happens in isolation.
I feel all contributions of historical insight will help focus us on
what happened in real time. Some viewpoints may prove to be
incorrect, my own no exception.
Why move to the Ukraine?
Self interest-Everyone desires to improve their lot in life, plus
unseen political manipulation of the Polish economy.
The Pomeranian woman who became known as Catherine the Great and the
Enlightenment created changes? Perhaps somewhat. . . To serve as a
buffer against invaders and clear the land for Mother Russia?
Perhaps. Her interest was focused on bringing Russia into the
modern world, continuing where Peter the Great left off. In doing so
firming up her niche in history. She expressed self interest well.
(maybe even did her hubby in) It certainly was no great love for
the Prussians and Germanic people.
Free serfs? The number of serfs more than doubled during her reign.
Serfs upon which equity loans could be secured, serfs that could be
sold as cattle. Look to one of the Alexanders' if you seek
expressions of kindness.
Lodz was the textile capital of Poland. An industry with 'cottage
industry' opportunities and participation. A lucrative industry that
Russia yearned to claim as her own. Look to the taxation structure
changes brought about in Poland under Russian rule that brought the
textile industry to the beginning of an end there. People moved,
lacking understanding of high level manipulation to get them to do so.
The following is an old writing that may give some insight.

A continuation on this tack can lead to reasons why Germanic settlers
of Volhynia (capitalists at heart and why not? They worked for their
possessions.) who after the Bolshevik revolution where treated with
extreme prejudice. Death and Siberia. They lost their value to
Russia. The dying seldom know why, yet sense they are preferred in
that state.
