My husband's grandfather Adolf Reschke spent 23 years (1889-1913) as a young
teacher/cantor a few miles west of Lodz. I am in possesion of his
autobiography wherein he speaks of his life in that area and no where does he
mention that he nor his family was treated poorly by the Russians or anyone.
He taught young children, but he does not mention which language he taught
them. He was a very religious man, however, and wrote about the kindness of
the neighbors and "his congregation." On one occasion he was confronted by the
police about a fire at the school building, but was treated well in spite of
the fact that he had failed to report it to them. In 1913 he decided to leave
the area with his wife and nine children and return to Germany. They stopped
at Konitz (Chojnice) east of the German border, purchased land and built a
home and barn. He and his son (my husband's father) where drafted into the
army. After the war, they returned to Konitz, sold their property just before
the Polish officials started confiscating property. They then moved on to
Germany. In 1922 and 1924, the entire family immigrated to North America.
