Hi Frank,

I can relate a story that may have bearing on your question.

In 1980, I visited my great-aunt, who was still alive in Essen, Germany at the time (she passed away in 1983). She had been born in Chelpowo (near Plock) in 1895, and fled to the West after WW2. In 1919, she married her first cousin, who lived in Cieszkowo, near Plonsk (about 30 miles away). When I asked her how they had met, she explained that the German communities in the Plock region held regional gatherings (fairs) about once every season (roughly four times a year). One of the primary reasons for these events was to allow the young people to mix and get to know one another, allowing a good mixture of families (reducing inbreeding).

It occurs to me that it would be possible that the old folks would also meet to discuss politics, business prospects, and how the farms were going. If prospects were better at another location, they could learn about it and make informed decisions about whether or not to move.

    -Paul

Subject: [Ger-Poland-Volhynia] General question about moving from village to village

Does anybody have some general information/thoughts how people back in the 1800's decided which new village to move to.
I have ancestors who lived about 40 miles southwest of Warsaw but suddenly ended up in a small village that was 100 miles southeast of Warsaw. How would they have known about the place? Did somebody tell them to go there? Were there scouts who came and told people about new places?

I am wondering how this might have happened.

Regards,
Frank
