I am fairly new to family research and need help, please.
My family on my mother's side were from Volhynia. Her father's name was Wilhelm Bauer, born in 1874 in Barbatschisna. His father's name was Philipp Bauer who arrived in Volhynia in 1860 and bought land in Barbatschisna. Among other children Phillip had two daughters, Olga and Emilie who married in Odessa. In 1910 they and their husband emigrated to the USA.
I have no idea what their married names were. How might I go about finding this information. And if I knew their married names how could I trace their descendants in the US?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sig Gerber

Does anyone out there have a connection to any or all of the following Volhynian families, who ended up in Leduc or Millet, Alberta: (1) Valentine (William) Riehl (1871-1954), (2) Johannes Friederich Wunsch (1825? -    ) his wife, and (3) Juliana Schmidt (1853 - 1921), who was almost certainly a sister of Gustav Schmidt  (1871 - 1961), both being daughters of a Wilhelmina (____) Schmidt.  it seems to me I once saw a WUNSCH family history book, but it alas it has disappeared.  Thanks.

Don,

Perhaps you already have them, but there are brief write-ups about these
Riehl, Schmidt, and Wunsch families in the Leduc and Millet history books.

I have a Wunsch family that settled in California but their relatives, the Semrau family were in Alberta. If you need this info let me know. Amy

Looking for information on my grandfather's Russian military experience in
WWI, I fell upon this site and thought it worth sharing

...for those interested in articles on the subject of WWI, but particularly
relating to Central Europe and Eastern Europe - Poland, the Russian Empire,
Austro-Hungary, Germany, the Baltics this appears to be an excellent site.
If you are interested in other world regions - you can choose that too.
The subject matter is enormous and worth a browse if you want to get a
handle on the era and the region during this World War period.

Partners of the site are from institutions from Germany, Poland, England,
Italy, among others in Europe and abroad.  The articles are contributed
from writers and academics from around the world.  Your won't find your
ancestors here, unless they were "personalities" during this time, but
you'll find something that will catch your interest.

The home page:  http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/project/about/

The Region of Eastern Europe
http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/regions/Eastern_Europe

The Region of Cenral Europe
http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/regions/Central_Europe
<http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/regions/Central_Europe>

I only found a few articles on Volhynia  (note the spelling - no W!)

One general item on Internment in Canada covers those German/Ukrainian
immigrants affected by WWI in Canada
http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/article/internment_canada

and in the USA
http://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/article/austro-hungarian_enemy_aliens_usa

Note that each of the articles also have source information, external
links, related articles etc.

It'll take a while to cover this extensive site..... maybe for a rainy
day...

Helen
