One more thing, Linda.  From a genealogy perspective I don't think it matters if the name is Kiepert or Kepert.  Both would be the same name as would Kypert.  In my experience vowels are not very important to how a name sounds or is pronounced.  Consonants are much more important.  I think I am up to 27 different ways to spell Schultz but they are all the same name.
