[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] SURMA/SURMAN

I am trying to help a friend with her family research (she doesn't have a
computer).  I found a Wasyl SURMA about 1850 in Austria Hungary or
Ukraine/Poland.  His son Eliasz SURMA was born in 1875, Stara Sol, Ukraine.
This is confusing to me.  I have a ancestor who was born in Warsau Poland
but too early for any records so have not worked in this area much.   


Eliasz and family came to the US about 1907 and the last two children were
born in New Jersey.  On one of the census reports I see Eliasz as Alco or
Elco.  His wife's name is Anastasia and she is listed as Anna on the census.
Is there anyone that has this family in their tree?  

Am hoping someone can help direct me so I can figure this out.
