One can download data from Ancestry in gedcom format and import into any other genealogy Program on your computer.
When I am helping a 'newbie' get started, I encourage them to set up a genealogy program and input their data. They can then upload all or part of their family tree to whatever site on the Internet, or share with other familiy members. If the internet is down, as it is a lot where I live, I can still work on my project.
By the way there also is RootsMagic and Ancestral Quest..

Subject: [Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Software recomendations
Looking for suggestions for software. I have been using Ancestry.com for
research and entering data, photos, comments , etc. I now realize that I
am tied to Ancestry forever for access to my work. Their Family Tree Maker
looked like a great option because it said it syncs your software, say on
my PC, with the online information. I assume that all the information is
downloaded to my PC. Looking at some reviews of the latest version were
not so positive. Thanks for any help.
