Probably mentioned before, but Uof Calgary has digitised some books on line
on German immigration.  found in their Multicultural section

several are only in German.

One in particular I found, The German Community in Winnipeg, 1872 to 1918
is a good general book - although dealing mainly with Winnipeg, there is
good background information.
