I agree.  The German double ss symbol (also known as the ess-zet) "ß" could appear to be the letter p.


Is this a hand-written document that gives Rupland as your Grandmother's birthplace?  Or is it a printed document?


Do you happen to have a scan of it?

Are you sure it is not Rußland (Russland) = Russia? Before WW1 most of 
Poland incl. Warsaw was part of the Russian Empire.

My grandmother's confirmation document lists her as being born in Rupland 
(b. 1896) yet elsewhere her birth place is given as Warsaw.

Would Rupland be a village nearby or a district within Warsaw ... or does it 
have another meaning?

To note, this was written by a Luther pastor in Alberta, Canada therefore 
accuracy suspect.
