This is timely in light of Remembrance Day.

City of Victoria has created a new website called a City Goes to War,
highlighting the First World War era.

One section deals with those who signed up.  The database is searchable by
country of birth, religion, region of birth.

Country of birth brings up 13 born in Russia.

Some of the spellings are odd, but that is nothing new.  Clicking on the
name brings up details and the external link at the bottom (there is a link
there!) brings up the Library and Archives Canda attestation paper for the
recruit.  Interesting feature is that it notes whether the individual
survived the war, was a POW or was killed.and where he is buried, if his
remains were found.

Only one - Adolph Ludwig Riemer - had a Wolhynia birth - and where
Gotfried, presumably his father, as the next of kin, was living.

Someone has done some research but there may be some errors too.  Riemer's
entry states he had previous military service, but his Attestion Paper at
LAC states not. However he did survive the war.
