[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] a question

A relative intimated that apparently some time after the revolution(1917)our
grandfather, who taught students, was as well teaching religion and
apparently because of this transgression was supposed to serve a time in
prison; however his son volunteered to serve instead and this apparently was
acceptable; I found this hard to believe and was wondering if any one had
heard of a similar experience that is, instances where substitute serving of
prison terms could be allowed.
