Hi, Gordon,

I agree mostly with what Gary says.  1844-1849 are likely identical
records for Maślaki.  I doubt that they present any significant
differences other than which is a better development of the film image.

On 746800, you will see 1827 and 1843, not available elsewhere.
Many parishes have this kind of overlap, for a variety of reasons,
I suppose.  If you want to "unturn every rock", you will need to see
the film.

In Russian Poland, researchers should pay particular attention
to original records (Księgi metrykalne) versus the copies
(Kopie księg metrykalnych).  Most of the time, we are dealing
with the latter, the civil transcripts.

Since it is normal and obligatory for us Lutherans to be looking
in available Catholic records before the early 1840's  (as well as
Lutheran) in Russian Poland, this is an important distinction.
Original Catholic records are in Latin; the copies or civil
transcripts (after 1808) are in Polish, then Russian.

I can think of several cataloguing errors at the FHL with regard to Lutheran
films in Russian Poland.

1. Władysławów (Turek) is a mixture of originals in German
and copies in Polish, yet catalogued as copies.

2. The other early parish Iłów (Sochaczew) is called
original, yet the same phenomenon occurs.

3. Reformed Evangelical Żychlin (Konin) has two entries,
one for each kind of cataloguing. The cataloging of "original"
also shows the language mixture of German for the original
and Polish elsewhere

4. Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (which I have not seen) also shows the mixture;

5. Zagórów  (Słupca), years back, was catalogued in two different
ways:  copies (Kopie księg metrykalnych) and records of civil
registration (Akta stanu cywilnego).  I examined the copies, which
had gaps in the records available.  The Akta stanu cywilnego
did not, appeared to cover the same time frame (and more).
I ordered in films of this type, and to my eye, they were identical
with the other.  The religious copies were at Archiwum Państwowe w Poznaniu;
the others were from  Berlin-Dahlem .  LDS has now combined
everything for Zagórów  under a single catalog entry.

For most genealogists, a record is a record is a record.
Sometimes, it DOES matter knowing where records came from.
As we transition from using microfilms in a family history to digitized
images on the Internet (a process that certainly will not be complete
in this century), you will need to know why some records are on
the Internet, and not others.

A record is a record is a record. "It does not matter where the
record came from."  The Family History Library really does have
the best collection of records.  However, they are not posting
all their records.  Sometimes, the Polish State Archives is.
LDS microfilmed records in a variety of repositories.  To see
a complete set of records (such as what you can order on
microfilm from the Family History Library), you would have to
visit websites for *each* of these repositories.  Ain't gonna happen.
Some of the diocese/archdiocese church archives (Catholic) may have
websites, but few or none are posting digital images.
