If you think you might have a black sheep in the family - someone who might have received the death penalty for some heinous crime, or someone who simply disappeared and was possibly a VICTIM - Library and Archives Canada has an inventory of the Justice Department's files
PERSONS SENTENCED TO DEATH IN CANADA, 1867-1976:
An Inventory of Case Files
in the Fonds of the Department of Justice
http://data2.archives.ca/pdf/pdf001/p000001052.pdf
Brief details are provided - the criminal and the victim . Some of the files might be online, but most would have to be ordered for details. Sometimes newspaper clippings are included in the files.
Some Western Canada folks.
For example - I found a Gustav Angermann in one of the files. He was murdered by a young neighbour in Burstall Sask in 1945. Newsclips gave details of family and the investigation. Also found him in Find a Grave - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=91339194 which had a few genealogy details. So - if you're related - this explains his disappearance!
Couldn't say if others are as interesting - but it's another source.
Also http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/canada.html a list for the whole of Canadaand the main link www.capitalpunishmentuk.org has bits on other countries and the US.
A bit gruesome but fascinating nonetheless......
