I don't know the total cost to travel from Volhynia in the 1800s, but I do know that my grandfather, Rudolph Tittlemier and his father Heinrick arrived in Montreal in 1910 and the family story is that there was not enough money to go to South America so they went to Manitoba. The story also relates that they only had $25 between the two of them and the money was passed from father to son to show to the official that they both had money. They traveled on the Prinz Adalbert.
I have a photo of my great grandmother posing with hops and that story is the "officials wanted to send the photo to the old country to encourage immigration to Manitoba". So perhaps some help was offered by Canadian agents?
Good Luck in this search....I will follow it carefully,
Bonnie

I believe that some of you have already researched the Schindel Family in Saskatchewan, mainly in the Melville area.
My great, great grandparents were: George Muller (Miller)
Marie Laubenstein
My great grandparents were: Ludwig Schindel born 1865 died 1936
Amelia Muller (Miller) born 1865
Emmanuel Schindel born 1864 died 1939
Mary Schmidt born 1860 died 1935
I know that these two Schindel lines are related prior
to my grandparents marriage - Ludwig (Louis) Schindel and Sophia Schindel - but not certain how.
Perhaps Jack Leigh/Steve Stroud can help me unravel some of the mystery.
Thanks,
Donna Fredin

Good morning list;
Has anyone had contact with the Red Cross in Liverpool, England? Family
legend says that my dad had been helped by them in 1909. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know the approximate cost of the voyage from Volhynia to North America in the late 1800s?? That would include ship and other travel, food and lodging, documentation....? To me, this sounds like it could be very expansive and times for some families in this area could have been very difficult.
?
