I'm trying to research these related families. I have some stories in
letters from an aunt who wanted to preserve our family history. The
letters
were written over a ten year period, full of interesting details- mostly
unsourced. I took the letters and plugged what I could into
ancestry.comand into the Washington state digital archives (half the
family emigrated to
Canada, half to Washington;) my paternal greatgrandparents and
grandparents(HAMMERMEISTERs) w/their children emigrated from Prussia in the
1890s-1904 to Canada, then to Washington about 1920. Johann
HAMMERMEISTER(1882-1953) and Caroline HAMMERMEISTER(1891-1969) married in
Ellerslie, Alta 20 Oct 1907. Robert SCHIEWE, Dan RIENAS, Julianna
HAMMERMEISTER and Lydia WINTER signed it along w/Father LOEB. Aside from
the pastor, they were all related somehow (REINAS is the maiden name of
Johann HAMMERMEISTER's mother; A SCHIEWE married a niece of the couple
later.) Carolina's sisters were Lydia WINTER OTTO(1890-?after 1969) and
Wanda WINTER BABLITZ(1893-1976) who both lived in Bruce, Alberta in 1969,
and a younger sister Locadia WINTER WINKELMAN(1898-1920) who died in Vader,
WA. Their mother, Louise HANSCH WINTER was a BABLITZ for a brief period of
time, then resumed the last name WINTER. She lived with Lydia and Peter
OTTO in 1912 at the time of the census in Strathcona, and reportedly lived
with Wanda BABLITZ's family after living with the OTTOs. Louise had one
more child in Canada: Edward BABLITZ(1907-?) While these people were in
Canada, the rest of the WINTERs and HANSCHs emigrated to the USA. Wilhelm
WINTER(1835-1910) and Rosalia BIEDINGER(1839-1925; names verified fr/their
daughter's death certificates) emigrated with their daughter Julianna
WINTER
KROLL's(1875-1954) family. First they lived in Berrien, MI, then moved to
WA by way of Racine WI. Later Peter's other sister(spelled
Emilie/Emilia/Amelia1862-1941) who had married Louise's brother
(August1870-?) and had a large family in Volhynia moved to the USA. There
were 2 other brothers who remained in Volhynia: Adam HANSCH had a paper
factory which was prosperous until WW2 when the germans took his factory.
Stephen HANSCH was a Lutheran/Baptist preacher who was taken away to
Siberia
and starved. (I don't know for sure when these events occurred, and I am
only guessing their last names; my aunt's letters are puzzles in places.) I
guess I should send for microfilm and review the whole file for clues. If
these family names sound familiar to anyone else with german russian
relatives in Alberta Canada or anywhere else, I'll be happy to share the
notes about the different branches. Johann HAMMERMEISTERs(1882-1953) birth
location is Welingen, Russia(Wolhynen?) and his father's is Compreva Van
Jofske, Poland(how it's written on his US Naturalization papers.) Maiden
names of wives on that side were Amelia REINAS(1862-1940) whose parents
were
Ludwig REINAS and _ KARWALSKY (I am uncertain I have spelled these peoples'
last names correctly) and the generation before either BARTH or KERNS. Any
help, any clues, any leads... Whether in Canada or in Volhynia, or even
earlier in Poland, I would be very grateful for any help about where and
how
to look. Thank you for your time and help, Katherine Jeffrey

Katharine,
The rural history book South Edmonton Saga contains the story of Johann
Hammermeister and his wife Amelia Renas. They immigrated to the Ellerslie
district in 1894 and later moved to Tacoma, Washington. There are also
stories of their son Emil and Louise (Vogel) Hammermeister and grandson
Herbert and Gladys (Gutknecht) Hammermeister. There are also photos.
Perhaps you already have these articles. If not, I will be glad to scan
the
4 pages and send them to you by e-mail.

I do have a copy of the pages, but the pages with the photos are scanned so
that the text closest to the binding is in a shadow. Would you be willing
to try scanning those pages for me, please? By any chance, are there any
entries for the extended family?

I would tend to agree with Dick that we may be looking at two different
Wilhelm Winter Families unless you have independent evidence to the
contrary
(outside of the St. Pete Records).
One in Zhitomir Parish
Births
Winter Julianna 18 Sep 1875 Marianin Zhitomir Wilhelm Rosalie Biedinger
1884069-2/1876 580 521
Winter Adolf 13 Dec 1882 Friedensdorf Zhitomir Emilie Winter
1895614-3/1883
434 502 " Illegitimate, father's name not given"
Marriages
Winter Peter 27 Mar 1885 Zhitomir Zhitomir Hansch Luise 1897692/1 179 98
Hausch August 13 May 1885 Zhitomir Zhitomir Winter Emilie 1897692/1 180 166
One in Rozyszcze
Winter Wilhelm 22 Dec 1877 Leshachne? Rozyszcze Wilhelm Rosina Werner
1884071-1/1877 550 64
Winter Gustav 15 Dec 1884 Nadeshdapol Rozyszcze Wilhelm Rosalie Werner
2380019/1884 220 1946
Winter Michael 08 Nov 1878 Leschachow? Rozyszcze Wilhelm Rosine Wegner
1895627-2/1879 640 136
Winter Michael 30 Jan 1880 Rozyszcze Lezachow Wilhelm Rosalie 1897588/2 372
46 Age 1 year. Born at Lezachow
There is a Marianin and Friedensdorf close together on Jerry's maps but
they
are in Nowograd-Wolhynsk Parish.
Maybe someone on the list can better explain this or locate another set of
locations in Zhitomir Parish.

Katharine,
I picked up the mention of Strathcona, Alberta because I have an interest
in
that area. However, in the rural history book that covers Strathcona
there
is no mention of the families you list. I also looked them up in the
SGGEE
database for Volhynia (St. Petersburg). Are you sure your Wilhelm Winter
family moved from Zhitomir parish to Leschachow in Rozyszcze parish. The
birth record of Julianna Winter 1875 gives the parents as Wilhelm Winter
and
Rosalie Biedinger, whereas the birth records of sons Wilhelm 1877 and
Michael 1878 give the mother as Rosine Wegner for one and Rosine Werner
for
the other. And the marriages of the children Peter Winter and Emilie
Winter
are both back in Zhitomir in 1885. There may be two Wilhelm Winters.
Finally, the name Hansch can easily be misread as Hausch, or vice versa.
The first world war deportation to Siberia of Germans from Volhynia could
be
an explanation for the disappearance of families. Many families were
decimated by the hardships and disease during this time, or they remained
far away in Siberia.
I hope this helps.
