[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Village name

Thank you Jerry & Al.  As always very helpful information.  Another question
if I may.  So, this is the town from which my family fled in 1944.  My G-Oma
& G-Opa didn't go on the journey due to their age.  They were killed in town
by soldiers who wanted their horses (that's war!).  Anyway, their death
records I will find in Thorn (hopefully!).  The individuals that fled
would've registered along the way with the Red Cross?  And families were
reunited following the war through the Red Cross?  How did they do that?
How did they know where to go to register?  Where could I find the
information they registered?

Could anyone offer a suggestion as to how to find a place name?  The village
was once known as Klein Bossendorf.  How do I find out what the village is
called now?  It is a village around the Torun area.  Thanks!

According to Kartemeister.com ,? Klein Bo~sendorf (ulaut on the o) is today
known as Zlawies Mala.? It is located at E18/20 N53/06.

Looks like about 20 km or so NW of Torun on Hwy #80.

Hi Barb,

Jerry has correctly identified the town, pinpointed its location, and given
you its current name.

If you are interested in Lutheran or Catholic church records, or civil
registration, the easy online
source for determining this for West Prussia is in the "East and West
Prussia Gazetteer" at
http://www.progenealogists.com/germany/prussia/index.html, which is based on
the Prussian
census that was taken in 1905 (no family data like USA, Canadian Or UK
censuses, in case any one
wants to know; just statistics).

In 1905, Klein B?sendorf was in the Lutheran parish of Gross B?sendorf, the
Catholic parish of
Scharnau, and the civil registration district of B?sendorf.

The status of availability of church registers from the Thorn area is given
at
http://www.westpreussen.de/kirchenbuch/kirchenbuch.php?landkreis=Thorn
And it turns out, the parish of Gross B?sendorf was formed in 1903.
Before that, the records were in Gurske, now G?rsk.

Now, if you look at the LDS library catalog, you will see that they have
filmed from 1614 to 1865 for births and marriages.  Deaths go later.
Disappointing, but take a look at the date of filming, 1959 and 1969.
The end date is based on privacy laws (the filming was likely done in 1965,
and was "published" on the catalog in 1969).

Go back to the German-language website, and see what it says about
Gurske.  Records are in three places:  State Archives in Torun (Thorn),
Evangelisches Zentralarchiv in Berlin, and LDS.

Don't be afraid to use websites in foreign languages.  You can use Google
to translate the webpage!  In a separate window, open up google.com.
When you hold your mouse to the right of the google search box, some
clickable options appear.  In English, choose "Language Tools";
"Sprachoptionen" in German.

On this new google page, look for the option (bottom of screen) "Translate
a Web Page" (or "Webseite ?bersetzen).

Go back to the window that has the foreign language website.  Highlight
and copy (right click, copy), then go back to the google window, and
paste over the box below "Translate a Web Page".

Select the source and target language, and google will do the translation.
Human language is far more complex than what machine translation
can handle.  But, I find that the translation is generally tolerable.  You
get the general idea.
