The New Yorker, August 3, 2009 issue has a remarkable article by Ian Frazier entitled
"Travels in Siberia-1".  He journeys over the Ural mountains, along the Convicts' Road, visits the death place of the Czar, recounts the history and geography of this vast area of earth.  Highly recommend reading what this gifted author has to say.
