If you try looking into naming books, etymological dictionaries, and surname 
dictionaries, this can get very interesting - in Hoffman's Polish Surnames, 
Kwiat- and Kwiec- mean "flower".  In Bahlow's German Names, Blum, Bluhm, Blümel, 
Blümke, Blüming (Low German Blohm, Blömke) in some cases probably the surname 
of a flower gardener, florist, in some cases from a house name, among others. 
  And in many cases, those who came to America with such a name may have 
translated them again, to Flower or Bloom or others.  There are numerous 
variations in every language. The title of the magnificent journal of the Sacramento 
German Genealogical Society is "Der Blumenbaum" - without the umlaut.
