[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] FW: Origin of name Duwe?

Hello Gunther,

Thank you for all the information on the name Duwe/Duve! I see a new
direction to study. (How woefully ignorant I am of european history!) When
you say "a Lower German varient" does it mean geographic (southern) or does
it mean a type of dialect? I have wondered why my grandmother went from
Poland to Antwerp to take a ship to the U.S. instead of departing from
Bremen like my grandfather. But perhaps there is no connection here except
a better way for a young lady to travel. I'll keep working on it.

Cynthia

Hello Cynthia,
yes, the DUVE surname (without accent aigu!) occurres in France since
early 17th century - but it is apparently not of French origin! In
Belgium the name 'DE DUVE' is quite common (even a Nobel Prize winner
bears it). It is of Flemish or other Lower German origin and means 'the
deaf' (this time 'de' is not a predicate of nobility but merely the male
article). Also in Germany the surname DUWE (DUVE, DOUVE, THUVE, TUWE) is
a Lower German variant of 'der Taube' which also stands for 'the deaf'.
