I think there is a quite definite Pomeranian origin of the surname. Garz 
is a little town in the southeastern corner of Rügen (the greatest 
Pomeranian - and German - isle in the Baltic Sea). Its name is Slavian 
and derives from Pomeranian / Polish word 'gardziec' = 'little castle'. 
Still more suggesting is the medieval Hanse town of Gartz an der Oder, 
some 25 km south of Stettin and in Prussian times trading center of the 
local Uckermark tabac growing area. Other name giving localities could 
be Garz, Cammin district, Garz, Karthaus district and Gartz, Pyritz 
district though towns are more frequently surname giving than villages. 
Wolfgang GARZ, ahnen at heveller.de , gives several GARZ from East 
Pomerania (i.e. Starnitz, Stolp district).
