Jerry & Otto,
I think there is a quite definite Pomeranian origin of the surname. Garz
is a little town in the southeastern corner of Rügen (the greatest
Pomeranian - and German - isle in the Baltic Sea). Its name is Slavian
and derives from Pomeranian / Polish word 'gardziec' = 'little castle'.
Still more suggesting is the medieval Hanse town of Gartz an der Oder,
some 25 km south of Stettin and in Prussian times trading center of the
local Uckermark tabac growing area. Other name giving localities could
be Garz, Cammin district, Garz, Karthaus district and Gartz, Pyritz
district though towns are more frequently surname giving than villages.
Wolfgang GARZ, ahnen at heveller.de , gives several GARZ from East
Pomerania (i.e. Starnitz, Stolp district).
