As many of you have noticed when reading your newspapers, the requirement of a passport for Canadians to enter the US and Americans to enter Canada are being phased in.

As of this year, if you were an American and wanted to fly to attend the SGGEE conference on August 10-12, 2007 in Calgary (with many good sessions on your German family history and with access to genealogical resources), you would need a passport. So if you are considering flying to the SGGEE conference, do apply for a passport soon. It is pretty easy but takes a while to be processed. It can be done by mail. As a bonus your passport is now necessary to vacation in Mexico and the Caribbean in the snowy winter. As of this year you can drive to Calgary without a passport but the passport requirement is coming.

Just so you Canadians don’t ignore this message, there is a FEEFHS (Federation of Eastern European Family History Society) Conference/Workshop on July 12-14, 2007 in Salt Lake City. This is a great conference covering not only Germans but other ethnic groups in eastern Europe plus it includes personal counseling sessions and aid to use the Family History Library there (so plan to spend at least a week). So if you were a Canadian and wished to fly there you would need a passport. Again driving from Canada to Salt Lake, you will not need a passport this year but you will in the future.
