Hi Bronwyn,

yes, good example. what i do is try several sites, they all seem to
have different advantages and disadvantages.
for example, http://mapa.szukacz.pl/ ,google earth, and http://
www.zumi.pl/namapie.html could not find Szury in the name search,
but I could find it with http://www.traveljournals.net. (which is
powered by google). This shows the exact co-ordinates but the map has
poor resolution.
ie. Latitude: 54.21667 Longitude: 23.01667 (Decimal degrees)

knowing the exact co-ordinates, you can now find szury in the other
maps. Interestingly, http://mapa.szukacz.pl/ shows szury on the map
even though
the name search doesn't find it. Google earth has the advantage that
you enter the exact co-ordinates if you have them.
In this particular case http://www.zumi.pl/namapie.html does not show
the place name, but the resolution is much higher than the others and
you can clearly
see individual buildings even. Szury appears now to be only a small
settlement of a few houses, which then makes it clear why it is hard
to locate.
To find it using http://www.zumi.pl/namapie.html, i entered suwalki
in the search, then navigated up the E67 by comparing the location
shown in
http://mapa.szukacz.pl/.

It is interesting, and I think a lot of people don't realize it when
searching for our ancestors, that many of the places mentioned in
documents are such tiny places as
this, and to make things worse, so many place names are not unique
even within Poland.

Happy searching!

Cheers,
-Larry
