Rose, This is just a guess but if the German name was Dorn, which means
"thorn", the Polish equivalents could be Kolec and Ciern, both valid names,
in addition to your Dorniewski.  Interesting coincidence that the name may
have originated in Thorn.

Thanks to all who responded.  I guess Dorniewski is Dorniewski..  with a
possibility of of "Dorn".
