Hi Robert & Gary:
My dictionary of German Names by Hans Bahlow says for Schattschneider see
Schachtschneider, so Gary is on the right track. They say the meaning is
Schacht (shaft) for Schachtschneider (shaft cutter), who cuts the schafts
for spears and lances. In Hamburg 1286 Hermann Schacht. Corrupted to
Schattschneider in Hamburg as early as 1262. It also says schachtgreber is a
shaft digger.

Robert,
My cousin's mother was a Schachtschneider. He claims that the
Polish equivalent was Cholowinska. I have a Polish friend who
cannot verify this, but she did say that the root word cholo means
head, as in the working face of a mine shaft. My understanding is
that Schachtschneider means pit cutter, I assume as in a person who
digs in a mine, so they may really be equivalents.
