I have to agree with this - My mother is blind and NEVER used conventional
measuring devices and her cooking (including the potatoe salad)is to die
for)  Mom's ONLY way was to 'listen'.   She is not well and has not cooked
in a few years, leaving me to try to 'measure up' to her way.   I haven't
tried the 'listen' nethod like my Mother did, but I do not use measuring
devices either.

My mother-in-law and her sisters (from Lipno Kreis) use a very novel
recipe method for potato salad.  In addition to the "pinches" and
"handfuls" etc, they also LISTEN to the sound of the salad when
mixing in the mayo and mustard.  This helps to compensate for the
humidity of the air and the amount of moisture in the potatoes.  I
did not believe this until I actually tried it.  This method produces
the absolute best German potato salad and you cannot describe the
sound to anyone.  One can only learn it at the elbow of a master cook.
