I looked at number of other detainees. Based on the release dates they must
have been detained at Ellis Island. My last sentence below is incorrect. She
was detained at Ellis Island.

Subject: New Find in EI Manifests

I discovered something new in the ships manifests for the Ellis Island. At
least it is new to me. My grand mother arrived on the Rhein May 12, 1906.
The hand writing is so bad/weird I haven't been able to decipher her
village. The writing is associated with one ships officer. I decided to page
through the manifest to find his hand writing again. In doing so I came
across detention lists made partly with a typewriter. My grand mother was
among them because she lacked enough money to get from the ship to New
Haven, CT. It notes she telegraphed husband for money and was released the
following day and served meals. She was immigrant alien having been in the
USA 1902-05. There was considerable list of people being detained. This list
is not linked at the EI website. The manifest notes do not hint at detention
in her case. These detention lists were at the very beginning of ship's
manifests.
Does anyone know what kind of documentation she would be carrying to prove
her status? Obviously she didn't need to go through EI again as she was
released directly from the ship.
