The Jewish origin MIGHT be true in their particular case (due to location).
First of all, it has been suggested to me that the name of SELINGER or
SELLINGER are commonly Jewish.
My "brickwall" is the birth family and birth place of my great-grandmother,
Bertha Emilie (nee Selinger/Sellinger) BARZ. Oral info says they emigrated
abt. 1870 as a family. I have not found anything confirming that. I may
have conflicting info that her father and her eldest son came earlier,
between 1870 and before 1884 when I can confirm the rest of the family -
mother, Bertha and other older brother- are in Joliet, IL.
Bertha married 1886, age 20-22, in Joliet IL to Ernst BARZ from Pomerania,
Poland/Prussia. We have his baptism and confirmation papers. His family also
setted in Joliet IL and all were members of the St. Petri Lutheran Church
there. I have copies of all the records, now St. Peter Lutheran, for these
surnames, but still no clues where Bertha and her birth family originated.
Does anyone on the List have a thought on an area that this family name,
SELINGER or SELLINGER, may have originated. I am open to any suggestions.
Thanks to all, Tricia M.
