While are in this area I would say visiting the National Archives II is a must. For the records from Russian Volhynia you will often get much additional information about your distant relatives like where they lived throughout their lives, who was alive then, where they were resettled during WW II, and who was "verschleppt" (taken away by the communists). This will show the contrast between your immediate family's experiences by moving to North America versus those who stayed there.
If James Kelling is present (daytime) he would be the best person to ask to show you how to use EWZ. You want to look initially in EWZ50 where the entire applications are presented in alphabetical order. Once you get Stammblatt numbers from EWZ50 records you may want to look in EWZ58 and see if pictures for any of your relatives are shown.
Keep in mind alternative spellings. As Dave indicated Wentland or Wendland might be used.
If you find any relatives you probably want to make copies of their entire records so you can spend time to study them later. The pages with either handwriting or typing are most informative. Use your time at the Archives to look up as many files as you can find. Once you have the copies you can study them all you want at your leisure. The staff will show you what film viewers to use to make copies and where to get a card to allow you to do this.
If your ancestors immigrated to the US then you could probably find their immigration records at the original National Archives building down by the Mall. They have volunteer staff there who will help guide you in finding those microfilms. There are shuttles that run between the two buildings so you could actually plan to spend a whole day between the two sites. Park at College Park (it's free and easier to drive to).

Allyn is quite correct. It is well worth checking out, even if they are not
direct ancestors -- some of my best EWZ clues have come from collateral
lines.
Be warned that there are many Wentland/Wendland files, especially for the
villages in the Zhitomir area.
There are other record groups that might be of interest to you when you are
at the National Archives in College Park. Ask either of the people at the
main desk for their advice.
