Jutta has given good advice for researching in Plock.

It seems that most of your data is from family lore.  With that in mind, 
one must consider if Ludwig was born in the city of Plock or in that 
region.  If he was from the region, then it will increase greatly the 
number of Catholic records you have to research.

You can research the microfilmed records of passenger lists for Canada but 
the only way to do it is manually.  I see from a GOOGLE search that you are 
in Australia which may complicate this for you.  I think you can order 
these microfilms through your nearest LDS Family History Centre.  You would 
need to search the ports of Halifax, St. Johns and Quebec City.  These 
records might give you an exact place of origin.  It is a tough task but I 
did it for my Frank family and found them by searching through 7 years of 
many microfilms.

According to http://www.whitepages.com/ , there is only one Trauntner 
family in the entire United States.  It is an usual surname and, if spelled 
correctly, this should help your research.  However, there are no listings 
with that surname in Germany so I am suspicious about whether or not this 
is a variant of Trautner, a very common surname.

I think the best place to start is with the passenger lists as this may 
confirm the spelling and a location.
