[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] German Occupation Descriptions

I am not sure if the following was a relevant occupation in the 
1850ies, but the only profession - sounding almost alike -  that I know
is  "Lotse" or "Lotsenmann" (in former times). A Lotse
is a nautical pilot, a guide showing the way at narrow passages and 
shallow places. But did they need somebody like that in
the lakes of Masuren?
