The scan that you show is handwritten in Cyrillic.  If you have Ukrainian
language support enabled (Russian lacks i) on your computer, you will see
the correct type block letters 
here: J`pnkh3h`

Since Ukrainian and Russian are phonetic languages, we can sound out the
name 
as: Kar-o-leen-i-ya (English phonetic spelling)

That would, of course, corresponds to Caroline in English.  Catharine is an
inaccurate translation.

I have a little mystery that I need help with:

My Aunt Caroline's Name appears on a document that was used when they
immigrated to North America.

One "translation" of the document said that her name was Karolina, but their
Ellis Island record says that it was Catharina.

The printed Cyrillic differs somewhat from the written and can lead to some
confusion when translating but if you check
www.colby.edu/library/collections/technical_services/wp/Cyrillic.html you

(District of Wielun). His wife Helene GNYCH born
on May 13, 1897 in Lututow (District of Wielun).
