I too would like to know more about the situation when leaving Volhynia at
that time.

My grandparents were Ludwig Fiedler and Hulda Holtz. They left Volhynia in
1910 and my grandparents maintained that they "fled in great fear". I
didn't understand why they were so fearful because, to the best of my
knowledge, it was not illegal to leave Russia at that time. My grandfather
had been conscripted into the Tsarist army so I assumed that he was
deserting which certainly would have been punishable by death.

I only know that they fled from Mydsk, Volhynia and made their way to one of
the fishing villages on the peninsula east of Wladyslawowo. They left in a
fishing boat from either Chalupy, Kuznica, Jastarnia, Jurata or Hel and
landed in Liverpool, England. From there, they sailed for Canada and landed
at Quebec city.

I have found records that prove they were not Russian citizens so they must
have landed in Canada as refugees from Liverpool, England. Their entrance
to England was by unusual means so there must be records confirming their
admittance and departure but I have not been able to find any such records
as yet.

Does anyone know the official procedure to legally cross the
Volhynian/Polish border at that time?

Ahh!! That"s the application being referred to! I recognized them as
trash immediately and deleted them.

about it, please reply to me personally rather than to the list.

Another virus is making the rounds using spoofed addresses and a zipped
file attachment. I received 5 of them personally on Wednesday but none
since then, some spoofed with addresses that I know to be genealogically
connected. This however is the first one I've encountered recently using
our mailing list address. I do not know the name of or any details about
  this particular virus.

Please remember - our mailing list CANNOT and WILL NOT distribute any
attachments. This protects against a virus being distributed through our
mailing list, even if a subscriber has become infected.

If you receive a message claiming to be from the list that has an
attachment, you can be sure that it did not originate here but rather is
spoofed from someone who is infected by a virus. Another way to help
identify a message that truly originates from our list is that the subject

line will be headed by the [Ger-Poland-Volhynia] phrase. I can guarantee

you that the message you responded to did not have that.

If you attempted to open that attachment without adequate virus protection

on your computer, it is possible that you are now infected. You should
run
a full virus check as soon as possible with a checker that has been
updated
in the last couple of days.

Good question, Virginia. My father got out in 1911 with the aid of a Jewish
"smuggler". He told the story only once, and at the time I wasn't into
writing things down, so I only remember the part about being told, when
almost at the border at night, to head for some lights in a farm house. It
would be interesting to know how organized this "underground" was. It must
have operated over the course of a good many years. I, too, would be
delighted if anyone knows anything about this.
