Dear list members,
as some of you just might know, I'm heading the research group "Dobriner
Land" in the association "Arbeitsgemeinschaft ostdeutscher Familienforscher
e.V (AGoFF), http://www.agoff.de", which is similar according the research
areas to the "Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe (SGGEE)
http://www.sggee.org".
I already got in touch with the board of SGGEE to arrange some kind of
cooperation. One thing is, that SGGEE members can take part at our closed
mailing list AGoFF-L (http://list.genealogy.net/mailman/listinfo/agoff-l).
SGGEE members can order photocopies of older issues of "Weg und Ziel" (see
http://www.dobriner-land.de -> Literatur - Periodika -> Weg und Ziel). We
are arranging too the exchange of our publications.
Other things will follow, for sure.
But for what I've been asked for, not only from Jerry Frank, there are a
lot of other "Dobriner Land"-researchers, is to clarify the situation of
the holdings, the "Evangelisches Zentralarchiv (EZA)" in Berlin is keeping.
The "Dobriner Land", the counties Lipno and Rypin in Poland, have a very
interesting history. The "ownership" of this countryside changed during the
last centuries between Poles, Germans (Deutscher Orden), Poles, Prussians,
Russians, Germans, Poles, Germans and again Poles.
During the second world war the Dobriner Land was included into the new
"Reichsgau Danzig-Westpreu_en". The Nazis did that because in their opinion
this was an old-german-belonging area, there were living a lot of settlers
of german culture.
In Congress Poland and later Poland (1815-1939) the priests (katholics and
protestants) had too the role for registration recording. Therefor church
records had to be written down in two books, one for the church and one for
registration purposes. The records are word for word identical.
I don't know why and how, but the EZA (http://www.ezab.org) is keeping a
lot of sources of the Dobriner Land. In my opinion it has to do with the
circumstances above (Reichsgau Danzig-Westpreu_en).
There is one official book of the EZA showing their inventory [Christa
Stache : Verzeichnis der Kirchenb|cher im evangelischen Zentralarchiv in
Berlin (1992)], but you will not find any info about the Dobriner Land. The
reason is that the ownership is not clear. I think, that the protestant
church in Poland (which is still existing) will claim or is claiming the
ownership of their inventory about the Dobriner Land.
But the EZA has a "Bestandsverzeichnis" (inventory listing) which I've done
onto the web page of our research group. Please feel free to visit
http://www.dobriner-land.de, click on the left side at "Literatur", then on
"Kirchenb|cher und Standesamtsunterlagen", then on "Inhaltsverzeichnis" of
"Evangelisches Zentralarchiv: Bestandsverzeichnis Leipe/Rippin". This page
is first in german, I do not know when I will have enough time to translate
it into other languages. If you have any questions, please ask through this
list, your question can be the one, another might have.
You're welcomed to visit all other pages at this domain too.
The EZA is not keeping any other sources for Poland (resp. Congress
Poland).
Bye
Uwe
P.S.: My own KERNTOPF ancestors lived for some generations in the Dobriner
Land. I assume, they came from the northern part of what is known later as
South Prussia (later province Posen). The "footprints" end at the moment in
county Rypin, especially the villages Losiaki, where my GGGGrandfather Jan
KERNTOP lived, when my GGGrandfather was born, who is named in his wedding
record as "Karl KANTOP alias K\HNTOPF". 7 from 8 of his children have been
named KERNTOPF, one KANTOP. When they were adults, they just used these
names, so that today we have near relatives with the family name KANTOP
resp. KANTOPF.
I assume that my GGGrandfather Jan KERNTOP was born in Zajeziorek or
Przyrowa in county Rypin and lived later in Chrostkowo, too county Rypin.
