Hello list members,
as even the name suggests, the pirogi / pierogi / Pirogen are neither of
Russian or Ukrainian nor of Polish origin but came with the Turkish and
probably the Turk-Tatarians to Russia and with the Russians to Poland,
the Baltic states and even East Prussia. In every Turkish snack shop in
Germany and elsewhere you can try delicious bvrek (->pirog) which is the
same kind of dough wrap filled with cheese, spinach or meat. I even
suppose an Eastern Turkestan origin and the riding and conquering Turks
(with bvrek in their saddle-bags) just being another link in the chain.
