Hi Alice,
The name Zerbin is one I have a great interest in. My g-g-grandmother was Louise Zerbin married to Karl Schultz. I have no idea where they came from and Zerbin is a quite rare name. That leaves the possibility that we may have links if we can find the right information. I know that by around the 1870s they would have been near Lublin.
All my ancestors for the last three generations lived near Lublin. The Lutheran church at Lublin still has an extensive collection of archives which no one has availed themselves to until one of us did it this fall. If you all were/are Lutheran there is a good chance your grandfather's birth record can be found there. There are a number of us from SGGEE who "come" from Lublin and we have a Polish contact who is interested in doing searches for us in the Lublin church.
Do you know where your relatives were during 1939-40? If they were in Volhynia or near Lublin there is a good chance they can be found in EWZ records. Many Germans in western Volhynia actually show up in Polish EWZ records because they were deported to Warthegau early on as an agreement between Hitler and Stalin. If this was the case with your family you would not find them on an Odessa search because they are really in EWZ52 instead of EWZ50.
You have gotten a good start getting this much information. At least you know where you should be looking.

Hello;
I have just begun geneaological to research on my father's side. As far as
I have been able to glean from the scant bit of information I have, my
grandfather Edward Zerbin was born in Lublin, Poland in 1882. His father
Julius Zerbin was supposedly born in the colony of Kolodesh, Dubno,
Volhynia. His grandfather August Zerbin was supposedly born in Eastern
Prussia, Allenstein and settled in Volhynia. My grandmother, Johanna Kriese
told me she was born in Lutsk, Volhynia in 1903 and her mother, Augusta and
father, Christof Kriese were both born in Volhynia as well . My grandmother
also told me her great great grandfather's name was Eric Kirschbaum and he
was born in Germany. I have done quite a few searches on several databases
that are Volhynia specific and have found nothing definite and specific on
either family as to confirmation of birthplace and birth dates. My father,
grandfather, and grandmother have all passed away leaving no papers which
might help in my search except for one letter where I got the information on
where my grandfather's father and grandfather were born. Could anybody give
me some help or direct me to where I could get more information? It would
be greatly appreciated. Alice Gavin (Zerbin)
