This is the old area of Volga German settlement in Russia where, up until
1941, there were about = million people of German origin who were almost
all of the Catholic, Lutheran and Reformed faiths. They were exiled to
Siberia and Northern Kazakstan and during the last few decades some have
returned to live in the area. Pastor Scheiermann is on a speaking tour of
Alberta and the Northwest USA. He is the dean of the Middle Volga Region
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church - European Russia. His parents are
both from the village of Yagodnaya Polyana and he was born near Omsk in
Russian Siberia in 1967.
The purpose of the tour is to develop partnerships with congregations in
North America. As the Lutheran church building in Saratov was confiscated
by the government in the mid 1930's and razed in the early 1970's, the
congregation now needs to build a new church and a free-will offering will
be received for this purpose.Much of the support for this and other church
work in the other cities and villages in the area will have to come from
North America Germany and other parts of the world.
