Perhaps the best we can do is guess at an answer. And the answer may
depend on other parts of the story that remain unknown. Since Marseille is
in the south of France, it would seem that passage to South America from
there would be less expensive than from northern Germany. We cannot
discount the possibility that they lived for a time in Germany before
moving on but there is a good possibility that Marseille was simply part of
the route that they chose to get to Brazil.
