To Lloyd and others interested in Moravian history:
I would like to draw your attention to a publication "Brief History of the
Brudergemeine (Moravian Church) in Poland: 1800 - 1945" which was translated
by Cy Harke -- himself a relative of Rev. Herbert Harke, who I believe once
served the Moravian congregation at Bruederheim, Alberta, where your Sampert
folk lived. I think that there may be a copy in the Moravian Archives in
Edmonton. They can be contacted through Bill Brese <wbrese at accessweb.com>.
The work is labelled a translation, but it is in some parts, I think, an
abbreviated version of a work by Pastor Hermann Steinberg ("Die Brueder in
Polen") who was a Moravian diaspora worker in Poland. Cy Harke has extended
this translation with material from "Die Bruedergmeinschaften in Polen" by
Pastor Karl Schafer. Both of these original works are present in the Archiv
der Brueder-Unitaet in Herrnhut, Germany.
I have had the privilege of borrowing Cy's personal copy about a year ago, and
I can tell you (since, as you know, I am always on the lookout for Samperts
too) that the name Sampert is not mentioned. But the book is very
interesting for anybody who has an interest in the Moravian Brethren in
eastern Europe.
The absence of the Sampert name in the book should not be taken as an
indication that they had a different affiliation at that time. The book only
mentions clergy and key lay-workers (e.g. choir leaders) by name.
There is an excellent map in the back of the book showing the locations of
Moravian congregations in Poland.
